St. Barbara is the patron saint of many groups, including:
Artillerymen: St. Barbara is the patron saint of artillerymen, armorers, military engineers, and gunsmiths. She is associated with courage and commitment, and is invoked against explosions, thunder, lightning, and fire
Miners and tunnelers: After gunpowder became more widely used in mining in the 1600s, St. Barbara became the patron saint of miners and tunnelers.
Sailors: St. Barbara is also the patron saint of sailors.
Architects, builders, and stone masons: St. Barbara is also the patron saint of architects, builders, and stone masons.
The Italian Navy: St. Barbara is the patron saint of the Italian Navy.
The tunneling industry: In the tunneling industry, it is traditional to establish a shrine to St. Barbara at the entrance of a new tunneling project.
St. Barbara is often depicted standing by a tower with three windows, which symbolize the Holy Trinity. She is also sometimes depicted holding a chalice and sacramental wafer, or standing by a cannon.
